Tranquil Rose

Our Hotel Boat

Tranquil Rose is a wide beam narrow boat offering hotel accommodation on the rivers and canals of Southern England. Purpose built in 1973; she combines the classic looks of a traditional canal narrow boat together with the comfort of a wide beam vessel. She set off on her shake down voyage on Easter Saturday 14th April 1973, and as her first operator David Tebbett mentioned recently “… this was a very eventful trip as the boat and my inexperience resulted in many groundings especially along the Trent and Mersey canal which at that time was only dredged with a 15 feet wide channel, now much improved these days.” I would like agree with David regarding improvements, but unfortunately, running aground still occurs, but it all adds to the adventure of life on the waterways!

An Old Picture of Tranquil Rose Hotelboat

The first commercial cruise took place on 12th May 1973 and she was based in Burton-on-Trent, cruising to Foxton, Leicester, Conisbrough, Boston and York. The company used a Daimler limousine to transport guests to the bulb fields from Boston or to the Peak District from Burton-upon-Trent. She had (and still has) central heating and a coal fired stove, and cruises cost £51 per person per week in 1974 …. how times change, although a pint was 14p (or 2/9p) back then! In 1987 she was moved south: being craned out at Nottingham, and in again at Stoke Bruerne, and began cruising in the South of England on the rivers Thames, Wey and Lee, as well as the Grand Union Canal. In the late 1990’s the Kennet & Avon canal was included and so created the itinerary that we still use today.

Accommodation

Tranquil Rose can accommodate up to eight guests in her five cabins:
  • Single Cabins: A compact cabin with a single bunk, wash basin, small wardrobe, storage drawers and under bed storage.
  • Premium Single Cabins: A larger double or twin cabin but for single occupancy. These cabins have an ensuite toilet, wash basin, small wardrobe or hanging space and storage drawers.
  • Double and Twin Cabins: A larger cabin with either a double or two single bunks (in the case of the twin). They each have an ensuite toilet, wash basin, small wardrobe or hanging space and storage drawers.
There is a spacious shower and of course, towels and bedding are provided. Beyond the cabins there is a large lounge with a licensed bar and cosy solid fuel stove for those chilly autumn evenings. In the lounge there is a good library of books and games and the lounge leads to a large covered well deck where you can relax during the day or evening, take in the fresh air and watch the world slowly float by.
